Over on BlueSky, authors are sharing their horror stories. It’s awful. So much worse than I imagined. It’s Alan Dean Foster vs Disney all over again.

Unbound went into liquidation and immediately a new company, Boundless, popped up. They now own all of Unbound’s assets … and none of its debts.

There are so many authors owed tens of thousands of pounds each. Many of them have no other source of income and this represents a year’s worth of royalties.

And are stringing these authors along. Saying things like: We feel terrible so we’ll make goodwill payments of as much of your outstanding royalties as we possibly can.

That leaves authors having to choose between:
      A. Playing nice and letting keep selling their books, hoping they’ll someday get some of the money they’re owed (while allowing that figure to increase daily); or
      B. Claiming rights reversion on the basis of nonpayment, thereby cutting their losses to an entire year’s worth of income and having to start fresh on their own.

I supported several books through Unbound, bought others, and borrowed some from my library. Seeing how they’ve shafted so many people out of so much money, I’m really feeling like I participated in this scam. It’s awful. I’ve lined the coffers of management at the expense of the authors.

Aaron Reynolds of Effin’ Birds is owed £75k, including royalties paid by a US publisher to Unbound.

          Effin' Birds @effinbirds.com
Following
They owe me about £75,000 and never made a single one of their scheduled repayments.
My US books are all a sublicense of my Unbound deal, so all US royalties went to them, for them to take a cut and then deliver the rest to me. They collected 18 months from Penguin Random House and gave me $O.

Yesterday I should have received the remainder of my owed overdue royalties, but did not.
I chased up Boundless, and got an email that boiled down to the following.
"We can't afford the other half of the repayment"

"Also, surprise, we also consider the May 31st royalties to also be past debts, and as such we are making those a "goodwill gesture" situation, and
won't be paying those on time either"
Play nicely, we might pay you this money some day if we like you enough to feel goodwill and want to
do a nice.

So as of today Boundless owes me around £8K
for 12 months of book sales, minus the partial payment they made a few months ago.
I have no promise that will ever be paid.

Anyway, late last night/early this AM, Boundless CEO Archna Sharma sends out a lengthy emall which boils down to "lol soz we said we'd pay you but ACTUALLY Boundless doesn't HAVE to pay you so we're not going to pay ANY royalties owed to Unbound because we're a different company now"

Remember, the money was due to be paid TODAY.
Lotta not-rich people counting on that money.
Sharma's email is FULL of cope, meanwhile authors out there suddenly finding out they can't pay their mortgages/other bills this month
