Johnnie Taylor: Rome Wasn''t Built In A Day (The !!!! Beat, 1966)

"Rome (Wasn't Built In A Day)" had been Taylor's first hit (#29 on the Cash Box R&B chart) in 1962, when it had been released on Sam Cooke's SAR record label. The song was credited to the Prudhomme twins (Betty and Beverly) and Cooke, who also recorded his own version of it.
At the time of this performance, Taylor was already recording for the Stax label in Memphis. While his breakthrough to mainstream success was still a couple of years away, he was making excellent records, which were slowly gaining him recognition.
The !!!! Beat was a short-lived syndicated TV show, which was hosted by the influential WLAC DJ Bill "Hoss" Allen and featured black R&B stars of the day.
I managed to get a video a copy of the shows in the late 1990s (and even wrote an article about them for our national Blues News magazine), but was glad to replace the videos with a fully-authorized DVD version which was issued by Bear Family in 2005.

Basement session tonight. Got the bass line comped and started tracking some guitar with B9 organ pedal. I need a different low volume thing going on in the chorus for some emphasis. Gonna try a bunch of stuff to see what works. Got a few dynamic peaks in the vocal track, so debating track automation vs slicing the track clip peaks and lowering the db on each clip. H’mmm. Definitely the most challenging song I’ve ever done, cuz it’s a blend of genres with a syncopated off-beat. #music #audio #songwriting #recording

There hasn’t been a single move that’s contributed to me disliking a band more than the decision to fire Jay Bennett from Wilco.
A Ghost Is Born is the album of Wilco’s I like that I listen to the least.
It was their first record without Jay, and the ONLY one I even remotely like of theirs that doesn’t have Bennett on it.
These songs are still good, but they lost something very magical when they fired him. They became completely boring and uninteresting on every possible level; entering banal sleepy dad rock mode, where they still reside to this day.
This was the last good Wilco record. Everything before was GREAT, everything after has been a steady diet of secanol.

Oh man. Another phenomenal band from my youth.
The four album run of Raise, Mezcal Head, Ejector Seat Reservation, and THIS were quite formative for me.
A great band that still doesn’t get the credit or respect they deserve.
Usually, when an album like this gets reissued, and they change or alter the cover to something different, it’s almost always for the worst.
Fortunately, the original cover for 99th Dream was so bad (I’ve always hated it), that THIS is actually an improvement.
Though, I STILL think they could have done better.
DGC dropped them after they recorded this, but they got to keep the masters. It’s a record that’s a little more #psychedelic and spacey than the previous three.
It was a nice final hurrah for SWERVEDRIVER 1.0, before they got back together and started recording again 17 years later.

This is a link to Gothenburg Symphony playing a suite by Hugo Alfvén. Really good orchestra! But why I'm posting is that about 15 min in there's a fun movement that is just the three bassoons together. They get an applause from the conductor in the middle of the suite. Well deserved.

My sweetie piped while a friend scattered his wife’s ashes in the ocean. Have been thinking about it ever since. She was the love of his life. Watching him walk alone down the beach to the water’s edge as the combers rolled in and the sky moved with the wind and rain. Hearing Westering Home and Skye Boat Song played beautifully, wrapping us all in the music, the harmonics of the drones dancing with the wind, left me really moved.
