    VARIOUS ARTISTS
Just West Of Something Big- A CFRU-FM Compilation Album
    1987 Canada pressing

A killer collection of and from in the late released by WCRFU in Guelph, Ontario, a community radio station.

All of the bands here came from the Guelph/Southern Ontario area, and this is a snapshot of late-1980s campus-radio culture in Canada — the kind of regional DIY scene that connected post-punk, experimental, folk, college rock, tape culture, and local art collectives before distributing things on the internet was a thing.
It was meant more as a local scene document than any kind of commercial product.

And what a scene it was.
Tons of really cool sounding bands on this; This I’ll File, Rigor Mortis, Exploding Postmen, and Built With Lego just to name a few.

Copies of this are apparently pretty scarce now, so I’m happy to have one.

        R.E.M.
        Monster
        2019 U.S. Remastered Reissue

A lot of diehard R.E.M. fans that I’ve talked to over the years seem to hold Monster as a bit of a disappointment, & not up to snuff.

I couldn’t disagree more, & this coming from somebody who is on record declaring his love, adoration and obsession for the early I.R.S. albums.

The previous two albums were (for the most part) dour, acoustic based, low-key “adult” music.
Monster was a result of drummer Bill Berry voicing his lack of interest in touring that vibe anymore, & wanted to make a lively rock record.
        The rest of them agreed.

Touring Monster almost killed Berry (he survived a brain aneurysm), & he’d end up leaving anyway, but I have a great deal of affection for Monster.

“What’s The Frequency Kenneth?” Is hands down my favorite of their songs not on UP, and along with THAT great album sits Monster as my fave of theirs of that decade.

            GENE CLARK
            White Light
            2023 Spain Ltd. Edition reissue

A phenomenal note-perfect songwriting masterpiece for a fine Saturday afternoon.

It baffles my mind that this album was only a commercial success in the Netherlands when it came out in ‘71.

            Sure.
NOW it’s recognized as the stroke of genius that it is, but how could have people missed it back then?

More than anything else, White Light shows that Clark was the true heartbeat of The Byrds.
The lyrics are poetry, the music absolutely sublime. Incredible countrified melodies. Just amazing on all fronts.

Listen to his take on “Tears Of Rage” and tell me his isn’t the best version.

            I dare you.

Most people consume songs, but I am just not into that. If it's not got a good album behind it, I am not interested.

I got really excited when I read about this.
I like Idles a great deal, and the feeling is mutual for Darren Aronofsky as a film maker.

This soundtrack is a perfect mix of Idles (4 new songs!) and atmospheric instrumental score pieces by Simonsen.

A lot of track titles reference Lower Manhattan (Alphabet City, Tompkins Square Park, Loisaida), which as a former resident of NYC, tickled me greatly.

The final track, “Rabbit Run” is truly killer.

                                    A really enjoyable record.
                                    Tense, nervous, and dirty.
                                    I’m very pleased with it.

                                        Stealing From Helpless Children
                                        1987 U.S. pressing

A wonderful, mind-boggling album that, for all its weirdness is quite musical.

Only 500 of these exist (I’m glad mine had both the original post card and comic book included when I bought it), and people who know about this band (and this record specifically) like to compare it to The Residents.

I’m not sure I agree that.
Yes, little moments here and there are reminiscent of that band, but I find this album FAR more interesting, engaging and weirder than anything they did.

BLITZOIDS were known more as a studio band, and they’d almost HAVE to be, after you’d hear what’s happening on this record.
Total anarchic sound collages, weird tape edits, abstract instrumentals that border on parody.

Three very odd individual pieces who, when they came together, made some very unique and adventurous music.
                                        Wild.

I've decided that the violin is not for me.  At least not right now, and it won't be unless and until my existing issues with the left side of my neck and my right shoulder get dealt with.

                                              So:
Does anyone have a recommendation for me, for a cello.  I want something that's going to hold up well enough for me to actually learn on, and then continue playing on; I want to get a decent amount of use out of it.  I also don't want to spend a huge amount on my first one.

                                              Thanks.

Well the next step in my chronicles for finding an alternative to streaming apps like Spotify has gone live

This time I ordered and tested out the Snowsky Echo, and it is rather lovely

I used this one mostly with wired earbuds (IEMs called Moondrop Chu II's) and the sound is by far nicer than what you're used to experiencing with bluetooth!

Anyway, if you're curious or following along with my adventure for new then you can find the link here:

Finally got around to listenign to this after asking about it to the signer last year. Glad it ended up on vinyl.

It's 40 minutes of wind, bugs, rippling water, rain, all from in-game. It's now listed as track 53 of the original soundtrack. Very soothing.
