sounds like the web is about to get a lot more annoying to use for #grapheneos users and others using #android devices with """compromised integrity""", people without smartphones, people using smartphones with other operating systems, etc.: https://support.google.com/recaptcha/answer/16609652
google's new "mobile reCAPTCHA verification" will require you to scan a QR code from either an iOS device with the reCAPTCHA app or an android device with up-to-date google play services.
EDIT: this is part of google's new "fraud defense" system, and is (seemingly) intended to be used for more "important" things like purchases rather than just e.g. comment sections. however, there's nothing stopping site owners from using this thing everywhere
Any lightweight app where I can download maps from open street maps, put markers for myself (basically bookmarks) AND automatically back them up or sync them to some place remote?
#OrganicMaps only allows manual backups it seems 🤔
@HennaVirkkunen But how would anyone install the apps if #Google locks #Android in September anyway? https://keepandroidopen.org #KeepAndroidOpen
Apparently, #Google has lost track of their goal for #Android "We wanted to make sure that there was no central point of failure, where one industry player could restrict or control the innovations of any other. " https://web.archive.org/web/20120501080416/http://source.android.com/about/philosophy.html
That page is 404 Not Found now...
Remember our call for #FDroid board membership?
We are glad so many want to help #Android #FLOSS and stepped up to the challenge, specially in these troubled times. Unfortunately we can't have everyone join now, but we welcome your submission next year.
Let's meet the new board: https://f-droid.org/2026/04/28/board-appointments-2026.html
#Google gate-keeping #Android is not only an #EU #DMA issue, developers and users will be affected all over the world.
Our own @eighthave gave an interview last month talking about the balance between security and freedom.
(Fennec #FDroid has offline translation 😉)
And remember, #KeepAndroidOpen!
Android is the mobile operating system where stuff can be built. If Google doesn't like your app, fine, users can sideload. And no, that's not going away. You can make your own screen reader, accessibility services, and for AI, Android phones now have up to 24 GB of RAM. I definitely wouldn't be able to use an iPhone as my computer for a week.
@mikebabcock So you're saying 3.9 billion #Android users should not be allowed to install verified/reproducible #FLOSS apps because... ?
#FDroid Client 2.0 is on track, already at Basic alpha5, did you test?
Besides a plenthora of cosmetic modernisation, it gets heavy rewrites internally.
One feature for #Android distros developers is the ability to "add a default repository".
Want to know how that works? How that changed? Read @grote 's post here: https://f-droid.org/2026/03/28/how-to-include-repos-in-rom.html
/PS: Make sure to forward this to your favorite secure and private distro developer. 😉
#Google trips over its own words, when they sell you #Android it's the best computing device in the world that does everything. After you bought it Google doesn't let you do anything *you* want to.
#Sideload is a made-up term. Putting software on your computer is simply called “installing”, regardless of whether that computer is in your pocket or on your desk.
What Do You Talk About When You Talk About Sideloading?
What does Google?
Here's #FDroid: https://f-droid.org/2025/10/28/sideloading.html
This week in #FDroid (TWIF) is live:
* Basic 2.0-alpha5 with faster UI feedback (no need for Developer mode)
* #keyboard in the news
* #aTalk brings #OMEMO 2 to #XMPP on #Android
* #Briar keeps Tor secure (no tricks)
* #CastLab w/ #FCast and more (no need to restart)
* #K9Mail #Thunderbird w/ avatars (after 7 days too)
* #LabCoat #Gitlab login
* #SessionMessenger help funding
+ 15 new apps
& 212 updates
You can read now: https://f-droid.org/2026/03/19/twif.html
One should not have to wait 24h for #FLOSS apps!
Android va devenir une plateforme fermée
https://keepandroidopen.org/fr/

https://lineageos.org/
https://e.foundation/e-os/
https://murena.com/fr/

KDE supports the "Keep Android Open" campaign
#Google will cut off independent developers to #Android if they do not register with Google first. This will kill independent platforms like @fdroidorg and severely impede FLOSS devs from creating apps for Android.
Many KDE apps are deployed for Android: KDE Connect, Itinerary, Tokodon, and there's even a test version of Krita for Android.
KDE calls on Google to reverse course and @keepandroidopen.
Android Developer Verification: Das Ende für Android Sideloads?
https://linuxnews.de/android-developer-verification-das-ende-fuer-android-sideloads/ #android #aosp #linux #linuxnews
@fdroidorg @marcprux At this point it would be crazy to develop any Free/Libre application for Android. Don't care what Google says tomorrow, we can NOT trust Big Tech. We need to be in control of our computing resources, both at software and hardware level.
PS: @EUCommission please take note.
#Google #Android #Freedom #GNU
How US Big Tech is doing in our 🇬🇧 house:
#Google ➡️ Proton 🇨🇭
Google Maps ➡️ #CoMaps 🇺🇳
#Chrome / #Edge ➡️ #Vivaldi 🇳🇴
Stock #Android ➡️ #GrapheneOS 🇨🇦
#Windows ➡️ #LinuxMint 🇺🇳
#WhatsApp ➡️ #Signal 🇺🇸 (Non-Profit)
#Facebook / #Twitter / #Discord ➡️ #Mastodon Green 🇩🇪
#Amazon ➡️ Currys / John Lewis / HMV / Qobuz / Waterstones / local shops 🇬🇧 🇪🇺
#eBay ➡️ Vinted 🇱🇹
It can be done people! Slowly but surely...
Noticed today that call recording was enabled on my Pixel 8. A feature that I used to have years ago on Android 6/7 or so with ACR Pro, but that Google in their great wisdom then took away. Now they've seen it fit to finally give this feature back as a 1st party one. Last checked the previous autumn and it wasn't there yet.
Of course, just expecting them to take it away again at any moment.
(You may suggest GrapheneOS / rooting / Sailfish / etc. as a reply, but it will be ignored.)
Not sure where #Google asked for feedback about their developer verification program, but they surely didn't talk with #FLOSS devs, civil society, privacy organisations or their #Android users
#FDroid did since September, and interacted with folks in the Fediverse, forum, email and in person
They all voiced one opinion: "developer verification must be stopped"
@marcprux has written an open letter, signed by likeminded organisations who want to #keepandroidopen
Click: https://f-droid.org/2026/02/24/open-letter-opposing-developer-verification.html
Google announced that as of September 2026, it will no longer be possible to develop apps for the Android platform without first registering centrally with Google. This registration will involve:
- Paying a fee to Google
- Agreeing to Google’s Terms and Conditions
- Providing government identification
- Uploading evidence of the developer’s private signing key
- Listing all current and future application identifiers
