@ainmosni @alexisbushnell @autistics I too love drum and bass, but it has to be the more "soulful" kind. An example:

Trigger warning: an ugly computer graphic zombie woman graphic is occasionally shown in that video for some distasteful reason, please ignore! It's just the music I wish to share.

What sort of Drum and Bass do you like?

      PAPER FACES
      Riding A Bomb
      1981 U.S. 7” single

First spin from today’s found dozen eggs.

THIS is actually a single I already owned, but since this one was in far better shape than the one I had, I grabbed it for an upgrade.
I was actually very surprised to find ANOTHER one of these, because it’s not exactly common.

This is great, early synthy & sounding music.
This 5-piece band from Kenmore, NY’s entire recorded output consisted of THIS 7” single and one 3-song 12”.

On THIS single, the songs are propulsive, and have GREAT lyrics.
Music very much of it’s time production-wise, but very cool nonetheless.

Very happy to score a much cleaner copy of this.

@micromot @autistics I listen to a lot of Mark Farina (famous for his "Mushroom Jazz" series, which I would describe as "HipHop Jazz", for its genre), where the Jazz beats sort of lackadaisically stray off track a little bit here and there, but then *bam* tighten back up again instantly, clearly demonstrating that they were just playing around, but make no mistake, they totally own that beat.

Mark Farina is a blinding genius of a DJ for his beat matching in the abstract - beats that only exists in the mind, but are only _implied_ in the music. That's an joy for me.

Holy shit. TIL that Janet Jackson is the only Grammy-winning artist with a CVE.

CVE-2022-38392 indicates that playing Rhythm Nation near certain hard drives will cause a crash, because the song contains a resonate frequency with a 5400RPM spinning disk of a certain diameter and construction.

              Neat.

Haven’t had enough time to play baroque bassoon lately! But today I decided to just make some time. Not sure if playing is frustrating because I just haven’t done enough of it, or because my setup isn’t optimal which makes playing harder which makes me not want to do enough of it…

                          Talking To God
                          1988 Australia pressing

                          This is a fun one.
More music from Australia, but very different than the NO album I posted a few hours ago.

Porcelain Bus were more of a jangly, alternative band with flashes of early R.E.M., and some of the more scrappy indie stuff.

Pretty fun songs here with really nice, punchy production to drive them home. The guitar playing on this album is particularly rad.

Two official albums over four years. They didn’t last long, but gave the world some killer rock music in such short time.

                            1988 Australia pressing

A very weird, dark, 4-song record that I found in a dollar bin.

This record has the most interesting cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Are You Experienced?” on it.
It’s as if Ministry or My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult had 40 beers and decided to take a stab at it.

It, along with the other three songs, are propulsive, pounding and industrial sounding.

If there’s any of my followers that hail from (or live in) Australia that have any further information on this bat-shit weird band, I’d appreciate the info.

Until then, I’ll keep being baffled by THIS then.

                              2006 U.S. 2xLP reissue

Been a long time since I’ve sat down and listened to Illinois from start to finish.

I posted the B-sides and rarities companion album The Avalanche, at it drove me to come back to this again.

This album was one of a handful that was a great source of comfort to my wife and I in 2007. We had moved into our very first apartment together in Woonsocket, R.I., and toiled in that joint for a year before hitting the road and moving to Van Isle.

Over that year, we listened to Illinois, Boxer by The National, Pete Yorn’s Nightcrawler, and a few other things on a loop.
We made that place our own, and we still remember that time (and the music we listened to) fondly.

We were so young, and had no idea what was in store for us down the road.

Sufjan will always remind us of that time. We love this album dearly.

                                  1980 Canada pressing

A funky classic on a Sunday afternoon!

“The Breaks” was a pivotal song for the history of the genre.
Blow was the FIRST rapper to sign with a major label, and the first COMMERCIALLY viable hip-hop figure.
THAT song was also the FIRST gold record for the genre.
A HALF A MILLION COPIES is insane for a rap single in 1980.
The industry was still afraid of that shit, and Blow blew the doors down for a lot of rappers, and had a lot to do with legitimizing rap and hip-hop as a viable industry and business model.

                                  Kurtis Blow.
                                  A man of many firsts.
