This is an abstract nighttime colour photo in portrait format of three Chinese paper lanterns hanging above each other with further red lanterns in the background and surrounded by red illuminated decorations. Chinese New Year Of The Snake, Singapore (2013). In the centre of the photo are the three red Chinese paper lanterns, the centre lantern is in the centre of the photo with one further lantern above and below. The lanterns are nearly spherical (a little wider around the middle than the top and bottom: just like planet Earth!). The lanterns have a wire frame that supports the paper covering. Towards the top and bottom are two Chinese characters with four visible and probably four more on the far side. The lanterns are lit from the inside causing them to glow with a bright strip radiating from the top to the bottom. Below each lantern is a golden frill of string arranged in a circle. Along the right edge of the photo is a line of 'S' shaped decorations made from a box shaped tube or tunnel with a red coloured covering and lit from the inside causing it to glow red. On each 'S' is a large, single flower, possibly formed from a wire frame with coloured glass or fabric filling the inside. The 'S' shapes and paper lanterns are repeated numerous times moving away from the camera, becoming blurred out of focus with increasing distance. To the left of the central paper lanterns is a darker area which forms a passage way with garlands of pink flowers suspended overhead. Since it was the year of the Snake, the 'S' shapes could be fashioned in a serpentine shape ?

Charlie just plopped down outside my office door on the wood floor, and I heard every bit of it. The funny thing is, when he walks across the wood flooring — even when there’s a rug — he sounds like a small herd of horses trotting through the house. When my daughter visited last, she kept asking, “Do you hear him?” I guess we’re used to it. To us, it’s a comforting sound.

Anyway, I knew exactly how I wanted to start this morning, but I forgot while I was working on the photograph. Now I’m just hoping the thought circles back.

Oh yeah — productivity.

I’m determined not to turn on the TV in the morning so I can actually get things done. The problem starts at lunchtime. I need to eat, and when I fix my lunch — usually a salad these days — I sit down in my recliner and turn on the news. If the news is dull or just plain depressing, I’ll stream a movie or a show instead. That’s where I get stuck. If what I’m watching is good, I’m already in the chair, already finished with lunch, so what’s the harm in leaning back for a few minutes to finish the episode?

But modern shows always leave some little hook dangling at the end, just enough to make you want to see what happens next. And with streaming services offering entire multi‑season series, it’s possible to get trapped for six seasons straight. I often break the cycle through sheer willpower — reach for the remote and shut the TV off cold turkey. Unfortunately, that usually leads to the next thought: “How about a nap before I get busy?”

This is an abstract black and white photo in portrait format of an enormous framework of bamboo scaffolding surrounding the west side of the Hong Kong Convention Centre in Wan Chai (2014). Filling the entire photo is this vast frame of multiple poles of bamboo attached to each other with lengths of plastic binding straps. The camera is set back from the structure by no more than ten metres and is angled directly at the frame. The base, sides and top of the scaffold are out of view outside the edges of the photo. The bamboo is fashioned into squares of about one metre in length and height. Each pole overlaps the next pole by about two metres with that area secured using numerous binding straps similar or identical to those used to wrap a large package. In view are thirteen horizontal lengths and eight vertical poles. Behind those lengths at the front is a vast matrix of further poles extending towards the building. Most of the bamboo is either vertical or horizontal, or stretching inwards towards the building forming cubes out of the bamboo, though there are some diagonal lengths for stability. It is hard or impossible to say how many frames there are between the first and the building but it must be at least five.

This is a dawn black and white photo of two large container ships passing each other in opposite directions in the narrow deep water channel at the entrance to the Port Of Los Angeles, California (2018). The still and silvery water rises from the base of the photo to the one-third up level with only the smallest ripples breaking the surface. To the right of centre is a large container ship underway away from the camera and leaving port. The ship is viewed from the rear with the stern and starboard side in view. The vessel is filling about half the width of the photo and viewed from about 100m away. There is a tug attached with a stout line to the stern of the ship. The tug is partially obscuring the ship's name 'KOTA CAHAYA' in large white letters and 'Singapore' the ships port of registry in smaller white lettering. The thousands of '40 foot' shipping containers are laid out 16 across and stacked 7 high above deck with the stack slowly sloping downwards forward of the wheelhouse / accommodation superstructure located two-thirds aft of the bow. A small wisp of diesel smoke trails above and behind the funnel. To the port side of the first ship is a second entering the port. She is underway, parallel to the first ship, though in an opposite direction. High above the bow and just legible is the vessels name 'YM UNANIMITY' and two Chinese characters above in white letters. Hiding behind the far side of the bow is the forward section of a tug assisting the vessel. In large white lettering on the ships side is the shipping lines name 'YANG MING' This ship is similar to the first in size and design and has the similar sloping arrangement of the container stack forward of the white wheelhouse. Above the funnel, aft and above the wheelhouse, is a tall stream of smoke indicating that the ship is nearly stationary and a calm wind. On the far side of the 'YM UNANIMITY' is a further gap of water before the waterfront lined with three old dockside cranes, a few trees and low rise buildings. Above and beyond is a clear and cloudless sky.
