Ia anyone on here actually using Telegram as a messaging app? I'm curious whether seemingly sane Mastodon users trust Durov (I wouldn't).

Learning how nodeBB works and have a working instance up. However, trying to follow Lemmy communities to test, or pulling in anything via federation, doesn't seem to work for me. Nothing in logs to suggest anything related to the action of adding/removing group actors from the subscribe list is actually happening. Federation is enabled in settings, canonical URL is correct.

Wondering if it's something obvious I'm missing.

Very interesting for the future of the Fediverse:

"Holos continues to be one of the most interesting projects moving ActivityPub forward. It runs an ActivityPub servers on your mobile phone, with a relay that handles your identity, as well as data forwarding for the periods when your phone is inaccessible. The latest update allows you to set your identity based on a domain name you own, fairly similar to atproto."

a post for helping ppl onboard to mastodon/fedi:

okie, so someone is wanting you to get on mastodon/fedi

                          what the heck is it?

it's a better way to do life online

you know how a gmail user can send things to a hotmail user?

                          it's kinda like that

you choose a server (also called an instance) that is your home-base and then public posts you make are "federated" out to servers all around the world

you can choose to keep posts private and only limited to your follower or even to just one person

                          there are no ads

there is no algorithm: we are the algorithm by reposting/boosting other ppls posts and being an active participant in creating things or just talking

it kinda feels like the Internet of old and it gives me hope

you can follow hashtags to get a feed of other folks doing similar things to you

many news orgs are on here too bc of flipboard

you can follow RSS feeds even with rss-parrot

wanna change your instance? you can! your followers and following lists can be imported to a new instance

some instances (like mine) have character counts past 10k, so you can post longer form content too

                          what's "fedi" mean?

fedi or the fediverse refers to how it's not just Mastodon that counts in this network: there are many other compatible softwares besides mastodon that are still all interconnected

mastodon is a non-profit project developed on top of protocol called activity-pub and it's what drives the fediverse

for instance (heh), a good instance for fellow trans folks is transfem.social which uses a software called sharkey instead of mastodon, but they still communicate with each other

i recommend getting started on a mastodon instance:

sometimes, depending on the server, sign up times can take a min

but once you get on and established (did you remember to turn on your 2fa?), make sure to add some details to your profile!

a lot of folks here don't wanna interact with blank accounts or accounts with no posts

once you get a bit setup, how do you find ppl?

well, first recommendation is to create an introduction post (tagged with hashtags)

here is mine for an example:

                          infosec.exchange/@sparklepanic

you can browse more related content by clicking on the hashtags in the post

hashtags are important to how discovery works on fedi

the culture of fedi is to ALWAYS use the CW (content warning) function for anything remotely 18+/nsfw and ALWAYS use alt-text on images (the descriptions for those with disabilities)

please don't boost images if they don't have alt-text

there are quite a few trans/poly/sex-positive ppl on fedi and the way we keep it nice is by making sure to always mark things with CW (even politics for a lot of folks is important, with "uspol" as the cw)

follow these to get started (not in any particular order, some do post 18+ occasionally, but they content warn)

following ppl is a bit different if they are on a different server:

when you click on them, if they don't share your home instance, you'll see something like "remove follow this person" and then you put your home instance URL into the box (to the instance ur already logged into) and then you can follow them!

another thing i should mention is defederation and codes of conduct: each instance has it's own code of conduct and the whole space has it's own version of netiquette, keeping ppl accountable for their posts and if it gets really bad, instances will "defederate" from each other so that you don't have to see content that is harmful or that doesn't abide by community standards

remember, these servers are basically all operated by volunteers: people with technical ability put them online at cost to themselves and they are usually administering it as a side-project or as a public service

make sure to throw some money at your instance admin if you can

fedi.tips/ is also a good resource! (or here on mastodon @FediTips

fedi is really cool and im so happy to be part of the community and hope that you too can be active online in ways that actually honor our humanity

@i47i If governments want to protect children from the harms of , age-based bans are not the solution.

Instead: Take all that funding that would be spent on enforcing the ban and instead invest it in development, hosting, and administration. The primary harms originate from engagement-maximizing algorithms, which the reverse-chronological and followees-only feeds of federated media, by design, do not have. This funding would help destroy the toxic oligarch-owned media through simple competition and an objectively superior product. Give children a better alternative, without all the , and they'll migrate of their own accord.

Meanwhile, to deal with coordinated mass inauthentic engagement, and to facilitate effective moderation, governments could invest through partnerships with research universities and known-good manufacturers such as @yubico to produce state-issued zero-knowledge credentials. These credentials could be issued, necessarily in-person, at government offices (such as Service Canada and its provincial and international counterparts, and at embassies for citizens abroad), as well as notaries public and other trusted institutions such as public schools and libraries.

With these, Fediverse instances would have a means to restrict membership to say, unidentifiable but guaranteed-unique individuals known to the government of a given country, and to make it impossible for a person to return after being banned for anti-social conduct, while maintaining mathematical impossibility of determining anything more about a person (besides what they voluntarily reveal through what they post) but that they've never been banned from the instance.

Making it impossible for the instance to identify the individual, or to gain any information from the credential but the fact that they've never been banned, prevents the otherwise inevitable breach of identity documents. It also prevents the otherwise inevitable slide into technofeudal fascism which inherently follows wholesale surveillance and the ensuing censorship, yet still ensures every person has exactly one chance per instance to be a decent human online.

Since there are a limited number of instances with which most will federate, and since all those instances have heavily overlapping pro-social moderation rules, the predatory users will quickly find themselves relegated to the broadly defederated instances full of Nazis and such, and to oligarch-owned social media.

Governments could also get themselves (ministries/departments, agencies, crown/state-owned corporations, elected and appointed officials) onto publicly federated government-only instances (i.e., ones where anyone can read, but only government principals could join or post), making it impossible to convincingly impersonate governments or officials. They could also use arts funding and tax policy to incentivize major cultural leaders (such as celebrities and private media production companies) to get on the fediverse.

Everyone decent having never joined the cesspool fediverse instances, and having migrated away from the oligarch-owned centralized social media, governments can then ban both of those, irrespective of users' age, without adverse consequences.

Taken together, these measures would benefit everyone except foreign influence operators, bot farmers, spammers, and the violently anti-social, while still allowing children safe spaces for community and free expression.

An attorney, who's a very good friend of mine, but not my personal attorney (and not affiliated with any of us at BOFH) called me this morning for something unrelated.

But during our conversation I happened to ask him a hypothetical:

"If someone sends me an unsubstantiated report about one of our users posting pics without permission, can I get in trouble for rejecting the report since it had no proof and didn't follow the DMCA?"
And he reminded me that Section 512 of the DMCA has very specific procedures that must be followed or we could lose our DMCA Safe Harbor protections.

And reminded me that specifically, informal reports from random users, alleging that someone has posted content "that doesn't belong to them", have to be rejected by me (and every moderator/ admin) otherwise we run the risk of losing Section 512 protections!

Stop reporting content that you think is posted by someone without permission. If you know the content is posted without permission, notify the Copyright Owner, and inform them they need to submit a DMCA Takedown in order to get the content removed.

I'm thinking there must be a way to get the @EUCommission to understand that the rescue Europe has from US tech serfdom relies on the very same people who are telling them to stop pushing Chat Control.

The overlap is pretty much 100%.

I got some help with the webfinger discoverability and you can now find your profile from any instance in That caused some loops though so we moved the site to nolto.social and there is no redirection so it will be difficult to spread the word.

I’m taking some time off the project due to some really hard comments on Mastodon. I really thought they wouldn’t get to me but they did. I hate the internet.

I've got a policy of don't engage with the trolls, just block them. My recent "plug" post went pretty viral (currently almost 1000 likes) and it brought a couple of them out - particularly those who think AI is the next best thing and tried to tell me it was lies and "post your prompt!"

Today I'll be spending more time on my streaming setup trying to integrate the chat from into an overlay on my streams. Wish me luck!

Once that works, the overlay goes. I'll be focused on Peertube then. I know I can bring the chat overlay off as an html which is a start.

If you have in family a senior who is not so good at using smartphone or PC, you can always do something small to help that person to be safer in the internet. How? You can simply help to update system and apps to reduce security risks.

It's not the bulletproof solution, but helps to improve security.

And if you have more free time, you can help a senior to learn how to safely use the device.

Not everyone is tech savvy and some people may have problems with using their devices. Let's take care of them and help them to learn about how to make it safe to use the device, how to safely browser the internet and how to avoid scams like messages asking to click a link.

Because making the Web better for the people is about making the Web better for all people.
