@neil It would seem to me that the #Fediverse generally, and any instance that has an active moderator, would be well placed to say 'we already comply'. We do have a content reporting system which makes it easy to report and take down content, and there is already generally an understanding that NSFW images should be hidden behind a content warning.

I don't feel that this is threatening to us.

Just found out through Vivaldi's news feed that Tangerine UI for Mastodon is officially EOL as of this month 🧡

The author ran it for nearly three years - hundreds of GitHub stars, 50+ instances, 40k+ users. But keeping it alive meant rebuilding it from scratch every time Mastodon shipped a major release, which just isn't sustainable when the fun of building it is long gone.

Honestly respect the decision. Burnout is real, and forcing yourself to maintain something you no longer use or enjoy helps nobody.

If you loved the theme, the author recommends giving Phanpy a try - apparently it was a big visual inspiration for Tangerine UI anyway.

Dug into the ActivityPub platforms beyond Mastodon with current FediDB numbers (June 2026): Misskey and its fork family, Pleroma and Akkoma, Friendica, GoToSocial, and the Threadiverse.

Misskey's custom emoji culture runs deeper than it sounds. Instances maintain hand-drawn reaction libraries that federate across the network. The closest analogue is early Slack workspace emoji culture, but federated.

Friendica has been federating since 2010 via its own DFRN protocol, Diaspora*, and OStatus. It added ActivityPub in 2019, consistent with its core goal of bridging every federation protocol it can reach.

GoToSocial exists for people who want a personal fediverse presence but find Mastodon too heavy to self-host. 250MB RAM, SQLite, no web client of its own. Runs on a Raspberry Pi.

I roll my eyes when conservatives say "if everyone would just accept Jesus..." etc. and just as hard when progressives say things like "What we need is for everyone to care about each other, stop striving for personal gain, protest like their lives depended on it, and do effective and persistent mutual aid."

They will not. Everyone will not just. If this is your plan, then you have no plan.

I don't want the Christofascist fantasy. I want the world where everyone cares for everyone else, even at cost to themselves, and opposes ridiculous and unjust uses of authority. I want the world where bullies don't exist, where psychopaths don't take advantage of caring communities. But neither of those worlds exists or will exist in the foreseeable future.

I want the same "what" as many people here, but I am almost always deeply skeptical of the "how." I'm not sure I've ever heard, on the #fediverse, any plan for how to reach the shared goals except "everyone needs to just..." and I frequently note that the goals of progressives are often identical to those of conservatives. The "how" is everything.

I don't know what the solution is. I don't have a silver bullet "how." Everyone will not stop caring about resources and become anti-capitalist, support others when they or their loved ones lack resources, or start protesting injustice at cost to themelves.

"Line them up against the wall" etc. is just as empty. What happens after that? For that matter, what's your plan to actually win this violent revolution you fantasize? Perhaps you enjoy a little progressive-world fiefdom on the fediverse and haven't felt the need to work out the details. Even if your pipe-dream revolution (which has no plan, no strategy, and no resources) succeeds, I have yet to hear any plan for a system to replace the current one that has plausible safeguards against devolvoing into this or a worse system. And yes, it's all systems. You don't get an exemption. Even "no gods, no masters" is a system, just (as usually articulated) a thin, poorly-realized one.

I don't have the answers, but I haven't seen anyone else with answers, either. The best approach I've seen is from someone I love dearly who says, when we have discussions like this, that we will iterate. We will try things incrementally and adjust and improve. This isn't "you'll be the first against the wall." It isn't "Everyone needs to become a really good anarchist." This is something I can at least believe.

Willkommen hier im #fediverse!

Hello, I guess it's time for some sort of an #introduction.

I'm Urho, 30-something software engineer from Finland. Traditionally I've been more of a lurker on various social media sites, never really posting anything, but now I figured I would join the #fediverse and actually try engaging from time to time .

In February I quit my job, put my belongings in storage and left for a year-long trip around the world. I do field recording as a hobby, so I took a recorder and a couple of microphones with me. The plan is to record all sorts of soundscapes from different countries, both urban and nature. I haven't really posted any of my recordings anywhere yet, but now I am planning on putting some of them (and some photos too) up on my personal website, as soon as I learn how to use Wordpress properly.

What else... I enjoy running, watching TV-series, occasionally playing video games, and practicing the piano (a little over 2 years now). Although, I don't really have a lot of time for any of those until I get back from my travels .

That's about it, I guess. Happy to be here!

Nein, das ist es nicht. Der Teil des Fediverse, in dem ihr euch aufhaltet, der ist eher links/grün und hier sind auch gemäßigte Konservative unterwegs.

Ihr wollt es weiter rechts? Dann wechselt auf eine andere Instanz außerhalb dieses Teils des Fediverse. Sucht euch eine Instanz die weiter rechts ist.
Wie ihr die findet? Schaut mal von einigen der hiesigen Instanzen die Liste der geblockten Instanzen durch. Die, die geblockt sind wegen Rasissmus oder Faschismus sind dann die potentiellen Kandidaten für euer neues Fediverse Konto. Dort müsst ihr uns auch nicht mehr ertragen. Aber jammert dann nicht rum, dass im Fediverse ja nur Nazis sind.

Last night I thought I was Fediversly-savvy enough to consolidate all four accounts to only two and merge/move all the people to the new two accounts. But apparently, I was NOT Fediversly-savvy enough 😅

Not sure what did, but none of the people was successfully moved and another two accounts were deleted in the process. By then it was way after 2 a.m.

So, I guess this is me RE-introduced myself 😂 to the #Fediverse system!

I have been on #Fediverse for about a little bit over a year and a half now.

After about three weeks over at #Bluesky, I decided to set myself up with a #Mastodon and a #Pixelfed account despite felt technically intimidated by the whole Fediverse thing. And I’m glad I went for it—enjoy the vibes, the different communities, especially the #Wordle community, and the people!!!

Reading a thread about ideas for a Fedi Dating platform and worrying that Fediverse will just become the same lonely addicting shit it's trying to resist against.

I'm not sure we need to emulate every single platform that exists.

What many people misunderstand about hosting your own content (like this social media instance) is thinking we somehow NEED a big audience or Big Tech involvement.

I'm perfectly fine if the world faded away and it was just the thousand of us here. It's like the early days of the web when we had small forums, nobody missed Reddit back then. Federation is a big plus, not a requirement.

It's the same with websites or IRC for me. I know people use Discord, but I still stick to IRC even if there are only about a hundred of us left. I know people use AI now and website visitors are dropping, but who cares? I still keep doing it for those who like to read.

I don't need the whole world involved for this to feel worthwhile. It's mine, I own it, and I host it for as long as I breathe. After that, it won't matter to me anymore, but I hope other admins keep things running the way I did.

What I notice most in this Bluesky vs. Fedi or ATProto vs. ActivityPub debate is the protocol wars and the surrounding narrative. One is clearly a VC-backed move, while the other is community-driven and backed by an association. I personally feel that the latter reflects the original spirit of the web, like websites did. That's why it's hard for me to trust a protocol that wasn't open from the start, wasn't built by the community, and came out of the Silicon Valley world, from Twitter, no less.

Knifflig wird’s, wenn‘s 'ne Flut von Instanzen wird, die wiederum Fluten von Accounts loslassen. Das zusammen mit frei agierenden #KI-Agents kann das #fediverse, wie wir es kennen und lieben, zerstören.

After Bluesky, Threads, and so on, the whole #WSocial thing is another reminder that it was never about the #Fediverse being "too complicated" or "just for nerds".

A bafflingly large amount of people genuinely only act on a gut feeling telling them that only commercial products with fancy marketing owned by a for-profit corporation can be trustworthy, 'official' and 'legal', for the lack of a better word.

If something is a commercial offering by a competent-looking, rich family man in a suit, it's clearly an official, legal, trustworthy product. You can be proud of using such a fancy-looking service.

When they see a community-run open-source project or a grassroots initiative, their first instinct is that it must be shady, illegal, complicated, broken or predatory in some way. It's probably some aftermarket grey area bootleg made by weird tech nerds, political groups with an ulterior motive, conspiracy theorists or some naive teenage hackers. They'd also be embarrassed for using it in front of their peers and neighbours; who uses some free back-alley software, are you poor or something?

The same people are the reason why Google is using the word 'sideloading', why scammers love wearing fancy suits, why people suddenly act childishly helpless in front of LibreOffice, or why DIY HRT is so demonised.

They trust any kind of 'official approval' over their own senses. If someone does something that isn't 'approved', they're a bad person or clearly endangering themselves and others. No idea why exactly, but psh, it must be wrong somehow, or everyone would do it, right?

If people on the Fediverse understood that the whole "it's all so complicated and clunky" thing is just a thinly veiled excuse for a general disdain for non-commercial software, we could finally stop making all our software imitate their corporate equivalents in a futile attempt to appease people who never gave us a chance in the first place.

You'll never convince them to treat it in good faith no matter how much effort or money you put into UX or 'ease of use'. All you're doing is making the software worse, e. g. through things like dot-social, verified accounts or begging brands, corporations and politicians to join and give your product some kind of 'official' validation.

Happy Second Birthday to my little miracle girl ❤️

Exactly one year ago today I was preparing to say goodbye to her. My 12-year-old dachshund had her first severe syncope episode. Her heart rate went over 200, and several times she completely lost her pulse.

I spent that entire weekend doing CPR on her, genuinely believing she wouldn't survive until Monday.

She's been living with dilated cardiomyopathy for seven years. On Monday the vet was honest with me - either euthanize her at the clinic or take her home and let her pass surrounded by her family.

I chose the second option. I wanted her last moments to be in a place she knew and loved.

I monitored her breathing and heart rate every 30 minutes, kept a diary, gave her all the medication, and even syringe-fed her water.
A few more times I thought I had lost her.

But slowly, stubbornly, she started coming back. She began to stand, then walk, then eat again. Her numbers stabilized.

And today - exactly one year after the day I almost let her go — she’s now 13 years old, running around the house, playing, and acting like her old self.

This photo was taken today while we celebrated her "second birthday".

I'm incredibly grateful she gave me one more year. I hope we get many more.
