I appear to be incapable of any banger-grade toots. I'm tempted to blame it on the . Have any of my fellow Autistics had any banger toots to speak of? Like are we all generally bad at it, I'm wondering? Is there some sort of measurable banger toot drought we are all doomed to suffer, as our lowly lot in the ? Maybe one of us is a scientist and can measure this, just saying. @autistics

I'm having high hopes for the latest Mastodon release, and I hope it will be widely installed.

The feature I care the most about, and contrary to what I'd guess many believe, is actually not the quote posting (though it was indeed about time, most other Fediverse services has had this for years).

But the functionality that has me really excited, and which will be a boost for the Fediverse at large, and what will make it more worthwhile for smaller instances to at least try to run their own little community-instance, is...back-filling of posts.

Most Mastodon users, especially on the large instances, had no idea it wasn't working, and the assumption for most new people/users to the Fediverse is that you see everything there is to see. That hasn't been the case.

The lack of it goes against everything one would have thought if coming here from any other service. Basically Mastodon will now load replies to posts from remote servers/instances even if they don't Federate historically.

The lack of that particular piece of functionality made it really annoying, borderline anti-social, to set up your own instance. Users of smaller instances thought they replied and contributed to posts. Meanwhile, the posts/replies from those smaller instances were literally invisible to the people on large instances. This obviously leads to people on small instances feeling "what is the point of replying?" which isn't a great starting point for building a social media community.

But as I say, apparently they have now fixed this, which was about time. The first bugs about this functionality missing are over 9 years old by now. Great to see it fixed.

I just tried to upgrade from 4.5.0.rc2 to stable.

              git fetch / checkout
              bundle / yarn

In the past, I have frequently mentioned how easy it is to move from one instance to another. I have done so twice in the past, and I generally recommend that people use that feature to get away from the big instances (such as Mastodon.social) and to one of the smaller ones so that the is more "spread out".

However, there are always some people who object to this, noting that while you can migrate your follows, followers, bookmarks, blocks and so forth, you _cannot_ migrate your old posts.

This has never bothered me since Mastodon is essentially a system, and I see microblogging as "fire and forget" in nature - any given post might be shared for a few days, but is soon forgotten unless someone bookmarks it. Besides, it's not as if the posts are actually gone from the old instance unless it closes down.

But many see this as a major obstacle to migrating instances, and thus I want to know: Does it bother you that you cannot migrate your posts when migrating Mastodon instances?

                            Yes, it bothers me:0

I'm moving my work here, reviews, and a lot of other stuff to come, for one simple reason: we need to defund the billionaires. It starts by ditching their data-mining playgrounds and supporting decentralized networks like this one. So, here I am.

To kick things off, I've just posted my review of The Institute. What an intense show. I loved it.

I'll drop the link to the full review in the replies. Let me know what you think. Glad to be here.

I used to ask my Gemini AI chat bot. Sometimes I wonder what should be my true intention for self-hosting. I asked if I self-hosted a fediverse server, should I have a large fan base first, like those TikTok celebs? My Gemini said no. It doesn't have to be that way. It doesn't need to be popular or have celebrities like those TikTok live streamers or Instagram good-looking artists. It told me that what is most important in self-hosting is: "data sovereignty". I think it really makes sense. My data isn't for big companies to mine and target me with ads anymore because I simply don't consent to it.

                                                    Day 3: delete

While we have the common dd, x or d{motion} like dap to delete a paragraph or daw to delete a word, there are less known ones.

When you do a 'd' like 'dap' to delete a paragraph, Vim copies it in the _yank_ register, overwriting what you have copied before.

To avoid that, use the "black hole register":

                                                    "_d{motion}

"_dd will delete the line without storing it.

                                                    1/3

It features a black-and-white photo of a large group of people, likely members of the organization.

The text "Anarkosyndikalismen i Norge!" ("Anarchosyndicalism in Norway!") is prominently displayed, emphasizing the group's focus on anarcho-syndicalist activism. Contact details for the NSF-IAA appear at the bottom of the poster.

The design has a vintage style reminiscent of early 20th-century revolutionary movements, aiming to attract support for anarcho-syndicalism within Norway's labor movement.

Hey folks - I'm kind of stuck. It seems there is less engagement nowadays on posts, outside a few very prolific (and awesome, and thankless) folks.

The main way I see to increase at least my own engagement, is to have a client/ActivityPub stack that handles both Mastodon/etc style user posts, and also handles Lemmy discussions. BUT most stacks seem to just dump *all* replies to *all* lemmy discussions into your feed.

Anyone ever wanted that too, or know of a client/stack for this?

And yes, all the LLM crawlers were a problem - but so were the links I posted to the , as they proliferated through the instances. 1000 "GET" commands within the span of a few minutes seemed to have been too much.

I have now upped my hosting plan twice - from "Small" to "Medium" to "Large" - and there haven't been any major outages since then. Even the preview card problem seems to have resolved itself.
