Down And Out In Beverly Hills
1986 U.S. pressing

DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS is one of those movies I saw as a kid about 50 times.

It’s also the very first time I heard Randy Numan’s “I Love L.A.”, a song everybody thinks is celebratory because of its catchy hooks & usage at Lakers basketball games.

However, it’s a wonderfully scathing criticism of everything that’s obnoxious & awful about the city.

As a person who goes to Los Angeles regularly, I can’t help but hear that song in my head when walking around, & not in a good way.
It’s a brilliant song; the verses are completely detached from that catchy chorus, sarcastically taking down wealth, artifice, vanity, superficiality, & the city’s overall absurdity.

It’s a great song, surrounded by a few Little Richard bangers and David Lee Roth on Side A, & the film’s score pieces on Side B.

“Someone's pissing on my hydrangeas!”

In today’s voice lesson I learned that I move my jaw way too much. So this week’s practise will probably include holding both hands on the sides of my face a lot of the time. At least there’s an emoji for it: 😱

I just had the idea - just a thought - that I might be able to help start a weekly jam at a local church, if I were to ask nicely, and if I could find a few other musicians willing to be sober.

        I wonder how I might ask, being a non-believer. I'm not much of a make-things-happen guy. I'm more of a helper.

I could lend some gear and play bass or guitar (somewhat - haha). Clean up after. Tell my friends.

        Hmm.

          My Eurovision 2026 ratings! 💙

          🇦🇱 Albania: Alis — Nân /
          7/10 / Woodkid?? In Albanian???
          🇦🇲 Armenia: Simón — Paloma Rumba /
9/10 / A real banger. No idea what's going on, but I like the energy, and I like Simón.
          🇦🇺 Australia: Delta Goodrem — Eclipse /
          7/10 / Yeah why not!
          🇦🇹 Austria: Cosmó — Tanzschein /
7/10 / It's not half bad, because I think German is an great language for a dance track, but the performance and visuals absolutely kill off any kind of goodness there.
          🇦🇿 Azerbaijan: Jiva — Just Go /
1/10 / ...I'm happy for u tho, or sorry that happened.
🇧🇪 Belgium: Essyla — Dancing on the Ice /
4/10 / Yas, give us nothing!
          🇧🇬 Bulgaria: Dara — Bangaranga /
8/10 / Banger. Will never listen to it past Eurovision week, but it's a banger.
          🇭🇷 Croatia: Lelek — Andromeda /
3/10 / This feels very conceptually confused.
          🇨🇾 Cyprus: Antigoni — Jalla /
7/10 / Solid, uplifting Southern European bop.
          🇨🇿 Czechia: Daniel Žižka — Crossroads /
8/10 / I was skeptical at first, but depending on the staging, it could be quite the showstopper - if Žižka hits all those notes just right.
🇩🇰 Denmark: Søren Torpegaard Lund — Før vi går hjem /
6/10 / I liked the performance, but listening to the song by itself, I was actually surprised how much of a nothing burger it is.
🇪🇪 Estonia: Vanilla Ninja — Too Epic to Be True /
7/10 / Not bad, and here I thought I will hate it.
🇫🇮 Finland: Linda Lampenius & Pete Parkkonen — Liekinheitin /
10/10 / Drama, catchy, Eurovision, camp, hot, everything.
          🇫🇷 France: Monroe — Regarde ! /
1/10 / France, Paris, c'est la vie ! 🥖 *GIF of Miss Universe screaming "FRAAANCE!"*
          🇬🇪 Georgia: Bzikebi — On Replay /
5/10 / The longer I listen to it, the less I like it. Neither here nor there.
          🇩🇪 Germany: Sarah Engels — Fire /
7/10 / Bangaranga II, except for some reason it feels like appropriation?
          🇬🇷 Greece: Akylas — Ferto /
10/10 / Catchy, queer, and Greek!
🇮🇹 Italy: Sal Da Vinci — Per sempre sì /
5/10 / Very torn, it's cute, and weirdly indoctrinating at the same time.
          🇱🇻 Latvia: Atvara — Ēnā /
1/10 / I think that ballads should be banned by EBU on grounds of being boring.
🇱🇹 Lithuania: Lion Ceccah — Sólo quiero más /
4/10 / Where are we going with this?
🇱🇺 Luxembourg: Eva Marija — Mother Nature /
5/10 / Get your dreamcatcher and feather hat ready.
          🇲🇹 Malta: Aidan — Bella /
          3/10 / This feels sinister, I don't know why.
          🇲🇩 Moldova: Satoshi — Viva, Moldova! /
          7/10 / High chaotic energy!
🇲🇪 Montenegro: Tamara Živković — Nova zora /
8/10 / Sick Europop. Again, wouldn't listen to it outside Eurovision week, but can't wait to hear it live!
🇳🇴 Norway: Jonas Lovv — Ya Ya Ya /
6/10 / Is this queerbaiting? Is the song actually fine or I'm just being confused by the moustache?
          🇵🇱 Poland: Alicja — Pray /
6/10 / She's got a good voice, but this trap (?) beat feels dated.
🇵🇹 Portugal: Bandidos do Cante — Rosa /
          1/10 / This again.
🇷🇴 Romania: Alexandra Căpitănescu — Choke Me /
          6/10 / Catchy 2004 emo throwback.
🇸🇲 San Marino: Senhit ft. Boy George — Superstar /
5/10 / Serving senior living by the sea discotheque realness.
          🇷🇸 Serbia: Lavina — Kraj mene /
          5/10 / Feels bad man.
          🇸🇪 Sweden: Felicia — My System /
          8/10 / Eurovision genetically-engineered banger.
          🇨🇭 Switzerland: Veronica Fusaro — Alice /
6/10 / If I had a car and this came in the radio, I might not change the station.
          🇺🇦 Ukraine: Leléka — Ridnym /
8/10 / Very well crafted track, and Leléka seems nice, idk.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom: Look Mum No Computer — Eins, Zwei, Drei /
5/10 / It's probably not going to get a lot of points, if just because the lyrics are absolute nonsense and the staging is cardboard-ey, but it is really catchy. I'm just not a big fan of meme-y acts.

Duke Ellington is one of the great figures in music history who catapulted our music into a new dimension.

And he articulated a simple truth: If it doesn’t have swing, it means nothing. If it doesn’t touch the soul, it might be nice entertainment—which is important, of course—but music, as humanity’s highest form of expression, is so much more. So get that swing, motherfuckers!

                          1971 Canada pressing

A lovely, VERY IRISH sounding folk record for a Sunday afternoon.

I found this in a thrift store not long after I moved to Canada around ‘07. It just looked really cool, and I assumed it would be some Irish folk record, and I was right.

However, I wasn’t prepared for how this album would catch me. I absolutely fell in love with it.
It’s got all the bells and whistles of traditional Irish folk balladry. Banjos, guitars, sing-along pub chants, whistles… the whole works.

However… it’s got a kind of political rebel spirit underneath, the same kind that all the punk rock I listened to as a kid had.
                          I just adore these songs.
                          Particularly “The Sun Is Burning”.
                          Such a great album.

                            1980 Canada pressing

A KILLER compilation of and meant to showcase bands from Northern England and other NON-London acts that were being ignored by the British music industry (and press) at the time simply for not being from London.

Tons of great bands that would go on to be important cult/underground acts like Modern Eon, Nightmares In Wax, Clock DVA, and Section 25.

It’s a great varied mix of cool music.
There’s even some icy industrial stuff here, as well as some atmospheric and experimental things, as well as some very melodic new wave.

                            Phenomenal comp.

New health minister—Hegedűs—in Magyar's Hungary government breaks out the dance moves at a celebration with citizens when singer Jalja starts "Midnight (The Hanging Tree)" (~Hunger Games), then is joined by the rest of the government.

A killer collection of and from in the late released by WCRFU in Guelph, Ontario, a community radio station.

All of the bands here came from the Guelph/Southern Ontario area, and this is a snapshot of late-1980s campus-radio culture in Canada — the kind of regional DIY scene that connected post-punk, experimental, folk, college rock, tape culture, and local art collectives before distributing things on the internet was a thing.
It was meant more as a local scene document than any kind of commercial product.

And what a scene it was.
Tons of really cool sounding bands on this; This I’ll File, Rigor Mortis, Exploding Postmen, and Built With Lego just to name a few.

Copies of this are apparently pretty scarce now, so I’m happy to have one.

A lot of diehard R.E.M. fans that I’ve talked to over the years seem to hold Monster as a bit of a disappointment, & not up to snuff.

I couldn’t disagree more, & this coming from somebody who is on record declaring his love, adoration and obsession for the early I.R.S. albums.

The previous two albums were (for the most part) dour, acoustic based, low-key “adult” music.
Monster was a result of drummer Bill Berry voicing his lack of interest in touring that vibe anymore, & wanted to make a lively rock record.
                                                            The rest of them agreed.

Touring Monster almost killed Berry (he survived a brain aneurysm), & he’d end up leaving anyway, but I have a great deal of affection for Monster.

“What’s The Frequency Kenneth?” Is hands down my favorite of their songs not on UP, and along with THAT great album sits Monster as my fave of theirs of that decade.
