“Monet’s ability to translate her online momentum into radio airplay in just four months has bolstered the fear that AI artists pose a real threat to the livelihoods of human artists. As a result, there have been renewed calls for legislation to protect the rights of real musicians, in an industry with few protections otherwise.” cbc.ca/news/entertainment/ai-a

Another evening of tracking bass. Deleted all my tracks from last night and put ‘em down again. Had one wrong note in the turnaround that didn’t work with the vocal. Did about 8 tracks with finger picking. Sounded okay, but couldn’t get the percussive attack I was looking for. So found a 1mm Dunlop pick in my stash and put down another 8 tracks. Not the most traditional reggae soul R&B type thing to do, but found the punchy bass attack sound I wanted for this tune by using a pick. And I’d developed a couple decent blisters on the tips of my right hand index and middle fingers after 4 hours of cranking on bass strings, so switching to the pick was a good thing. I love playing bass, but I’m not a mega regular bass player, so the ol’ digits aren’t used to this sudden intensity of playing time. At least I nailed the lines for this song. See what I’ve got tomorrow and do some comping.

Knocking out those shelves was a bunch of work, and now, a little reward.

This is a PHENOMENAL sounding pressing of this, but unfortunately, there’s a few tracks that have been omitted for time. The only one I care about that’s not here is “Gentle Groove”.
Otherwise than that minor bummer, this sounds like a borderline audiophile pressing.

This’ll tide me over just fine until I can find either an OG press, or the 2xLP version that MOV put out.

Finally managed to order myself an atomic purple faceplate for my Classic!!! Got it from Aliexpress. Very excited about it, this marks the start of my iPod modding journeyyyy...

Next up, gonna get a purple reflective backplate, and a bluetooth module along with an SD card adapter and a 2000mah battery. This thing is gonna be KITTED OUT and it's gonna look sickkkkk

My wife requested that I move a bunch of records out of the living room and upstairs spare room, so I had to knock out a few extra shelves on the big bookcase to fit them.

My wife is very tolerant of the crazy space-consuming things that make me happy, so I’m happy to oblige.

This is just a temporary fix.

You can only see about half the shelf in this picture.
It’s only a matter of time before ALL of it is just records.

                      Good enough for now, though.

Just found out that 10,000 Maniacs are from Jamestown, NY. John & Mary, who apparently played together before, during, and after the the Natalie Marchant years in 10,000 Maniacs, have roots near Jamestown, NY, too.

Anyway, they did a nice little 100(ish)-person concert tonight close enough to my home that I was able to see them. It was quite nice. It was sort of traditional contemporary (if that works) folk, and was a very pleasant hour.

it’s impossible to be puertorrican and not love Bad Bunny. i really have to pay more attention to his shenanigans because this outfit he wore at the is peak boricua

Bad Bunny wearing a gun metal black double breasted jacket adorned by a rhinestone AMAPOLA flower (also called FLOR DE MAGA). under it he’s wearing a café con leche colored button-down shirt, cream colored silk tie pinned down with a rhinestone covered tie clip and to top it all off, he’s wearing a pava, woven from thick black & brown fabric.

we see Bad Bunny’s double breasted jacket is a take on the 1950s Zoot suit ―but the jacket is shorter, ending at the waist instead of mid-thighs.

he’s also wearing brown gloves with green fabric made to look like cohitre; whilst holding a leather bag that most folks would think is a bowling bag but ―for boricuas of my generation (GenX)―, this looks like the weekender bags our families used to collect from PanAm and TWA, two airlines that became symbols of what Luis Rafael Sánchez called “la guagua aérea”.

almost forgot to include the shoes. they look like they may be short leather boots, which go with the Zoot suit aesthetics. they’re the same ivory/cream white of the tie.

this is peak boricua dandy.

I had so many test tracks, acoustic guitar and vocal takes, I had to dump the two comped tracks (vocal and acoustic guitar) into a new project. So instead of 50+ tracks, I now have two. Much easier to manage the track files now. And faster to transfer the file folder when I back it up after each evening session. Tracking bass guitar tomorrow.

To make a very long story short, I am aware that there is severe frequency loss in acoustic recordings. That is why they sound so tinny, even when compared to the earliest electrics. Some voices are affected more than others, but even the ones with the best recordings still experience some of it. With the advances in technology at our disposal in 2025, however, I am wondering if it would be possible to attempt to restore some of those frequencies. Ideally, it might sound like something from the 1940's, but I doubt that is possible, at least with the earlier records, so at least the 1920's or 1930's would be great.

The thing is, I don't know exactly what is lost. So my idea is to record a modern singer (with at least a somewhat similar voice to the original) on period equipment and digitally symultaneously. In this way, we would have the live singer, plus two very different recordings. We could then compare the live, electric, and acoustic versions with a device or software that measures frequencies. Once we have determined what is lost, we could then try to restore the actual records in question.

If we were doing this with a cylinder machine, it would be very easy. Not only can one literally still record at the Edison Museum, but there are people today who record in wax with both real machines and reproductions, including commercially! However, the first singer whom I have in mind for this, Francesco Tamagno, recorded on disks, which complicates everything. I was very familiar with cylinder recording prior to designing this project, though I had never done it myself, but I knew absolutely nothing about 78s. Then, I learned.

                                                                      scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk/o

As I was saying, it is beyond complicated! Even if we took a chance and recorded the wax master and then used it for playback, skipping the step of actually making a shellac record, there is still the issue of finding recording equipment from Tamagno's time, which is ridiculously rare and doubtlessly too expensive for most people to consider buying. You might ask why we couldn't just use a cylinder machine, since they were certainly around in 1903. The problem is that their frequency loss was different from shellac records, so it would ruin the experiment if the difference was significant. Is it? Can anyone tell me? Do we even need to make a modern recording, or is technology good enough that we can simply add in the frequences from previous knowledge? If this can be perfected, or at least made feasible, there are hundreds of singers whose voices can finally be let out of the can, at least a little, and made to sound more life-like! Many of these didn't live to see electric recordings. I'm sure everyone would jump on this if I said Enrico Caruso was on the list, for example. But he, too, recorded on disks. I wonder if we can skip the recording experiment and use a singer, such as Tito Schipa (my personal favourite), whose recordings span both the acoustic and electric eras, from 1913 to 1964, as a control and gauge the frequency loss that way. If we wanted someone who recorded earlier, we could try someone like Alessandro Bonci or Mattia Battistini, but both only made it to the 1920's.
