Some of the best conversations at happen when you're not looking for them. I noticed a shirt that said "I Support " and couldn't help but start talking to Michelle Wolff from the Guitar Center Music Foundation.

What followed was a conversation about programs being the first to get cut from school budgets. About 150 grant requests every quarter and only 30 getting fulfilled. About kids who might never discover they were meant to play an instrument. About veterans who could find healing through sound but won't get the chance. And about Michelle's own journey—an major whose voice was taken from her by vocal nodules, who had to rebuild her identity, and who never stopped being a musician.

      Give it a listen.

P.S. Sean Martin, CISSP and I recently met with Myka Miller, MM, MBA, Executive Director of the Guitar Center Music Foundation. We have some exciting plans to support their work. More soon.

        LAURIE ANDERSON
        O Superman
        1981 U.S. 7” single @ 33rpm

One of the most inventive, unlikely, baffling, and MOVING “hit” singles of all time.

Just two alternating chords using an Eventide Harmonizer and a Roland VP-330 vocoder, the song was broken and championed by the great John Peel on BBC RADIO 1.

Lyrically, it’s mind bending, and many people, including Anderson herself, has said it’s about many things.

I’m not particularly interested in any of that. Just that when I hear it (still to this day), it strikes such an inexplicable emotional nerve in me that I can’t explain.
It’s a remarkable piece of art.

Perhaps Anderson summed it up best.
        “Technology cannot save you.”

Please, never forget that Kool & the Gang wrote a song about falling in love with a short-order diner waitress who walks around with the coffee doing refills.

maybe you heard it on the radio and don't agree with me. just watch the video, and you'll understand. welcome through the rabbit hole, Alice...

I guess if one has to have a sore throat and temperature, right after the first rehearsal of a new concert project is pretty good timing. :P Glad I didn't miss the rehearsal because this is a pretty difficult program.
Works by Caroline Shaw, Roxanna Panufnik, Lili Boulanger and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani. I get to sing in the solo ensemble in the last one, just a few short bits but exiting even so!
Had to cancel all my students today and spend the day on the sofa, but at least I can listen to the new pieces and get a start on learning them.

              PAUL MCCARTNEY
              Spies Like Us
              1985 Canada 7” single

A song so horrifically bad, it’s to be heard to be truly believed.

To hear director John Landis tell the story of how this ended up in his movie is HILARIOUS.

The movie was DONE. Completely cut, with full soundtrack, EVERYTHING.

McCartney contacted the producers and said he wrote something for it. Landis HATED it SO MUCH, but because it was Paul McCartney, was forced to acquiesce.

“What are you talking about, man? Movie’s done! And this is the dumbest, worst song I’ve ever heard!”

So they used only the chorus and stuck it into the closing credits.

Landis also claims that McCartney told him it was “the best thing he’d done since John died”.

              Yikes.

I bought this BECAUSE it’s so bad.
For as many GREAT songs as Macca has written in his life, he’s also written something REALLY bad ones.

By the way… the movie is pretty bad, too.

                                      BONUS 7” single
                                      Yellow vinyl

I saw this in the record store today; a plain white 45 sleeve with JAWBREAKER written on it in blue marker, and a yellow colored record inside.

Turns out, this was a bonus 7” single that was included in a R.E.M. tribute record called Surprise Your Pig.

I had never heard of that record. It had Gumball, Vic Chesnutt, Jawbox, King Missile, and a bevy of other cool bands who love R.E.M..

Seeing JAWBREAKER on the sleeve was really all I needed to buy this (one of my favorite bands ever), and their version is a totally rad “Jawbreakered” version of “Pretty Persuasion”.

Also on the single are takes by Steel Pole Bath Tub (“We Walk)” and The Punchline (“Bandwagon”).

Pretty cool versions by all three, but the Jawbreaker track made me very happy.
                                      Jawbreaker fucking rule.

One Of These Days b/w Fearless
                                          1971 U.S. 7” PROMO MONO single

This is a bit of an odd duck.
If I knew what it ACTUALLY was, I probably wouldn’t have bought it, but it’s an interesting curiosity regardless.

“Fearless” is my favorite Pink Floyd song. Ever.
                                          Here, it is the b-side.
So clearly, I was siked to grab this promotional MONO single.

                                          Here’s the problem:

BOTH of these songs are edited versions of their original Meddle versions. But it’s the WAY “Fearless” is edited that is bothersome.

The whole second verse (“Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd…) is MISSING. Completely taken out.
Baffling enough. But what’s MORE confusing is that they left the chant IN at the end.
                                          WTF?!?!
Why not cut THAT out and leave the song alone how it is?!?! I don’t get it.

                                          Like I said… a bit odd.
Curious enough to hold onto for now, I guess, but I won’t be listening to this much.

                                            Rich Kids b/w Empty Words
                                            1978 UK 7” single

After former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock was kicked out of the band (for reportedly saying he liked The Beatles), he went on to form RICH KIDS with future Visage and Ultravox member Midge Ure.

                                            They didn’t last long.
                                            One album.

That album had THIS song on it, a high octane and catchy burner.
The b-side, “Empty Words” (not on the album), is also catchy in its own right, but the A-side is a LOT of fun, and makes this single worth having.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a copy of their lone album, Ghosts Of Princes In Towers. Would like to hear it at some point.

THIS is a hell of a gem 💎.

When I was in my local shop today, and came across this and noticed that all three songs were superhero & comic book themed, my interest was peaked enough to throw it on the shop’s table to sample it.

I got 10 seconds into the first song on side A, and stopped.
I immediately knew it was for me, and was going to take it home regardless.

These three songs are SUPER catchy, super infectious and charming lo-fi rock & pop.

@ainmosni @alexisbushnell @autistics I too love drum and bass, but it has to be the more "soulful" kind. An example:

Trigger warning: an ugly computer graphic zombie woman graphic is occasionally shown in that video for some distasteful reason, please ignore! It's just the music I wish to share.

What sort of Drum and Bass do you like?

                                                    1981 U.S. 7” single

First spin from today’s found dozen eggs.

THIS is actually a single I already owned, but since this one was in far better shape than the one I had, I grabbed it for an upgrade.
I was actually very surprised to find ANOTHER one of these, because it’s not exactly common.

This is great, early synthy & sounding music.
This 5-piece band from Kenmore, NY’s entire recorded output consisted of THIS 7” single and one 3-song 12”.

On THIS single, the songs are propulsive, and have GREAT lyrics.
Music very much of it’s time production-wise, but very cool nonetheless.

Very happy to score a much cleaner copy of this.
