Fediverse AOTY List – So Fedi, what albums got your attention in 2025? 🎧 🎶

Once again we’re compiling a Fediverse-wide, community-sourced Albums-of-The-Year (AOTY) list, of the albums – from any year – that rocked our worlds and got us through the last 12 months!

About 60 of us joined in last year and people seemed to like the idea of doing another round this year, so here we are! The call is open from now until the end of the year, then around New Years I’ll do up a blog post on the 1001 Other Albums site with the final list, complete with links to find the albums. You in?

      The Rules:

      1) Anyone with an account in the Fediverse can participate. I’ll include each submitter’s username in the final list, leaving off the instance unless asked to keep it in.

      2) Reply/DM to this post with your top album(s) of the year, to a MAXIMUM of 3 per person. I also accept emails (johnmastodon@1001otheralbums.com) if you include your Fediverse username. You can also reply to the parallel toot on the automated account linernotes.club/@1001otheralbu.

👉 “Top” is absolutely however you want to define it – favourite, most listened to, most personally important, most thought about, most surprising find, representative of an artist you really got into, etc.👈

👉 “Of the year” does NOT have to mean the album was released in 2025. Your submissions can come from ANY year, so long as it was key in your 2025 listening.👈

      3) The final list won’t be ranked or voted on, and will simply be ordered alphabetically. Multiple entries for the same album are most welcome and will be noted in the final list.

      4) Notes/reasons for your picks aren’t necessary but totally welcome and, if included with your submission, I’ll probably put them in the footnotes like last year.

Feel free to boost this as widely as possible, I'd love as many people to join in as would like.

In the meantime, we’ll continue going through our 1001 Other Albums list and will have a handful of regular spotlights before the final Fedi AOTY list is posted. Also, a reminder that we're doing a Fedi-sourced blog post on January 8 celebrating the 10th anniversary of Bowie's Blackstar album - check out the pinned toot for details if you'd like to join in on that as well! 😎

Until then, hope you’re all enjoying AOTY season and (re)finding some great albums to get you through the rest of the year.

        .

I just spent over 6 hours doing Christmas shopping, and I’m like Ben Stiller in the movie Heavyweights after the fat kids lock him up.

                          I am a broken man.

So it’s time for an incredible album to help relax me.

I’ve long been a fan of this record, and when I first discovered it, it was solely because I saw the name Elizabeth Fraser on it. A woman who’s voice is OTHERWORLDLY and who’s work I already loved from The Cocteau Twins.

An incredible evening listen, and a record I’m glad to have an ‘86 pressing of, as all the reissues I’ve heard don’t sound very good.

Beautiful album. A lovely, glacial hug.

At my kid's HS choir & orchestra concert. This school has a regionally-recognized program with at least half a dozen vocal and instrumental groups. They regularly send kids or groups to state competitions, have dozens of kids score extremely high on regional or state juried performances, and pull in hundreds (small town) of paid attendees to their frankly amazing middle school and high school musicals. 80% of students are in a musical group or course.

Sports are ho hum: rarely any regional or state competitiveness, and when that happens it is more often for tennis or volleyball than for the Big Sports.

And when you walk into the lobby and down the halls--including outside the auditorium where the concerts and rehearsals happen, there is literally zero recognition of music achievements. These spaces are dominated by the "athletic wall of fame" with glossy photos of coaches and big-sports athletes going back 50 years and life-size photo posters of the basketball team, baseball stars, etc., rotated out for fresh new professionally made posters every few months.

You can see some of the music program's successes if you can find your way down half a dozen twisting hallways to the , , and rehearsal rooms.

I think this is s slice of the USA's problems on display in thousands of schools every day. It is like pulling teeth to get a community to consistently support arts and other enrichment education for large numbers of students, but just try to pry apart a town's death grip on a tiny number of strong boys (always boys) playing ritualized violence and dominance games, often at the clear expense of academics.

                                          1963 Canada pressing

One week till and we’re starting to get into the spirit, indeed.

This will forever be one of my most cherished Christmas albums.
It’s unique in that, yes, there’s the traditional Christmas fare here in Johnny’s renditions of “Silent Night”, “Blue Christmas” and “The Little Drummer Boy”, but there’s parts of this record that feel like going to church on Christmas Eve, with the Man in Black as lead pastor.

There’s a very personal, emotional moment here called “Christmas As I Knew it”; about a particularly lean Christmas for the Cash family when Johnny was young, and which references his deceased brother Jack.
                                          It’s incredibly moving and emotional.

There’s also “The Ballad Of The Harp Weaver”, a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay set to music, wonderfully Johnny Cashed-up to close proceedings.

Just a wonderful sentimental favorite of mine.

                                            THE LEFT BANKE
The History Of The Left Banke
                                            1985 U.S. compilation

Really nice collection of stellar tunes from not only The Left Banke, but singer Steve Martin Caro (just Steve Martin here), as well as Stories, the band that keyboardist Michael Brown would go on to form after The Left Banke fractured.

“Walk Away Renee” is undeniably one of the greatest pop songs ever. Just a delicious psychedelic, baroque sounding masterclass in songwriting.
However, there are two other really great songs on here that make this record worth owning.

The OTHER Left Banke hit “Pretty Ballerina”, as well as the great Stories song “Brother Louie”.

With all that being said, when you’re talking about The Left Banke, it’s always gonna be about “Walk Away Renee”.
