Following Tags in Friendica

Tonight I made a new contact who shares a love of mine: modeling in 3D. I saw they tagged a post with the hashtag #Blender so I want to follow that hashtag.

In the image, you will see what I entered in the global search box and the result. There are actually many other posts underneath their post with the #Blender hashtag in them. I like this result so I click the plus icon under my profile pic to follow that hashtag!

Categories vs Hashtags in Friendica

I mentioned using hashtags in another post using the tag cloud. Friendica also has categories you can use as well. This is quite useful in community forum posts to categorize types of posts. How do you find them and what do they look like? The image on the left shows them just above the tag cloud in my status page or wall (found when I click the home icon). Notice the ones without the # in front of the words? Those were created when I gave at least one post a category when it was created. The image on the right shows the different colors for a hashtag versus a category. I will illustrate the usage with a community forum on another post. :)

Uploading Photos and Videos into Friendica

By clicking the triangle beside my profile photo in the upper right, I am able to see what photos or videos I have uploaded. When I mouseover the + I see the tooltip that tells me that is how I upload a photo. Friendica has tooltips for everything to make it intuitive!

In this case, the photos you see were automatically imported from my G+ mirror post. I will likely want to create a folder for them. Oh that is a hint! You can optionally also create folders of posts you want to save too ;) #Friendica #tips #tutorials

Sorting Friendica Network Posts

Your network page is your default page that loads. What is it? Your network page is a list of posts made by your list of contacts like your home stream in G+. In this image you can see the links at the top give you options on how to sort the posts by commented last, posted last, and so on. This selection will also be remembered next time you load your network page. Quite handy!

I have the tag cloud on by default on my "wall". This is an image of what I see when I click home and scroll down a bit to see the tag cloud. Moving a Friendica Account to Another Server

One feature I love is you can sign up on any public server now to learn to use Friendica then move to your preferred server anytime! You control your existence. :) I look forward to trying it!

Here's how:

This is an experimental feature
Go to "Settings" -> "Export personal data"
Click on "Export account" to save your account data.
Save the file in a secure place! It contains your details, your contacts, groups, and personal settings. It also contains your secret keys to authenticate yourself to your contacts.
Go to your new server, and open http://newserver.com/uimport (there is not a direct link to this page at the moment). Please consider that this is only possible on servers with open registration. On other systems only the administrator can add accounts with an uploaded file.
Do NOT create a new account prior to importing your old settings - uimport should be used instead of register.
Load your saved account file and click "Import".
After the move, the account on the old server will n... show more

Learning about Events in Friendica

A special form of postings are events. The events you and your contacts share can be found at /events on your node. To get there go to your wall and follow the tab "events" Depending on the theme you are using, there might be an additional link from the navigation menu to this page.

Here I am showing my calendar. I see any events that any of my contacts post. I've gone into my settings on the second image to allow anyone to download my calendar.

Is this setup doable?

#Fediverse Has anyone tried installing an instance/node/hub/pod/server under a subfolder while maintaining the base domain in the WebFinger? Is it even possible?

I saw this setup before but it was in #Friendica (if I remember correctly) and #XMPP (I think it was done using eJabbered) a decade or so ago. The software I'd like to do this is #WriteFreely and I'm thinking it will require redirection of #ActivityPub requests.

Normally- @channel@example.com is //example.com/channel- @channel@subdomain.example.com is //subdomain.example.com/channel
Anyone tried something like this?- @channel@example.com redirects to //example.com/subfolder/channel
There are two parts that I see in here:- Install WriteFreely in a subfolder //example.com/writefreely/ -- is it supported?
- Have @channel@example.com and all AP requests redirect to @channel@example.com/writefreely (which translates to //example.com/writefreely/channel); OR maybe make WriteFreely use @channel@example.com and capture all AP requests directed to the base domain (feature request?).

Learning to Connect on Friendica and How to Use Friendica

Another way to connect with others is within the threads. I can mouse over a commenter's name then click the people icon with the plus on it to bring up a connection request page.

Notice here the thread shows in the upper right corner of each commenter which network type they are commenting from.

Also notice I have red indicators on the menu icons. This tells me I have some notifications and some contact requests waiting for me.

Across the top the icons for this default Frio user interface theme are:
Network (posts all of my contacts have made), Home (all my posts), Target (select to see local or global community posts), Messages (private messages), Calendar (all events in my network of contacts), Contacts (used to see my contacts or find new ones), and Notifications (all things my settings are set to notify me about).

In the middle of the top is the global search. To find a person, I type @ followed by a name. To find a community forum, I type ! followed by a word like Support to find a community forum. To find a hashtag, I type # followed by a topic... show more

Finding a Public Friendica Server

Public servers

If you are not interested in hosting your own server, you can still use Friendica. Here are some public server run by enthusiasts that you can join. We recommend these based on their health.

Keep in mind that different servers may support different features like communicating with additional networks besides Friendica. It's best to pick the one that best suits your needs. #Friendica #tips #tutorials

New Member Checklist
Getting started

Friendica walk-through
On your Quick Start page - find a brief introduction to your profile and network tabs, make some new connections, and find some groups to join.

Settings

Go to your settings
On your Settings page - change your initial password. Also make a note of your Identity Address. This looks just like an email address - and will be useful in making friends on the free social web.

Review the other settings, particularly the privacy settings. An unpublished directory listing is like having an unlisted phone number. In general, you should probably publish your listing - unless all of your friends and potential friends know exactly how to find you.

Profile

Learned something new today about Friendica that makes it even more awesome :)

Something I really like about #Friendica (and by extension this probably works on #Hubzilla and #Osada too).

The ability to follow external tags and feeds.

I'm able to follow blogs, #twitter feeds and #mastodon tags and I'm just scratching the surface!
You just add them as a web address and Fca will even pull the #rss or #atom feed from the URL if it exists! Seriously, how cool is that?

#Friendica is an open source federated social network with a Facebook-style interface, including photo galleries, events and more.

It federates with Mastodon and Diaspora, so you can connect with people on both services.

You can try it out here:

https://squeet.me
https://libranet.de

...and at these sites: https://the-federation.info/friendica

The latest version has #ActivityPub support, so Friendica will federate with an even wider range of services soon.

#Nextcloud bietet neu auch ein Plugin an, welches dank #ActivityPub natürlich auch mit #Friendica connecten kann 😉

I know it's probably #blasphemy to say this, but I do prefer how YT #videos render in #Diaspora rather then the "thumbnail" view in #Friendica.

Contactos de Friendica

Joe llevo varios meses con 98-99 contactos en #Friendica!
Parece que llegar a 100 es imposible! :D Se abrirá una nueva puerta interdimensional? Destrozará los servidores de #Libranet?? :D

When I look at my Friendica statistics about the fediverse and federation, play a little with the numbers of
#Friendica, #diaspora , #red, #hubzilla, #GNUSocial , #PostActiv #StatusNet, #Mastodon, #Pleroma, #socialhome, #ganggo and additional from the-federation.info #Misskey #Osada

my server sees over 4000 servers and around 2.600.000 accounts.

But there are accounts and servers my server and the-federation.info don't see.

My guess how bit the #federation and #fediverse is around
Accounts: 3.500.000
Servers : 5.000

What is your guess?

(Sorry if this is a double post, but it seems my post from yesterday never made it through)
In a Connect/Friend Request, what exactly does Ignore and Discard mean, and does it mean different things for different protocols? If so, what does it do for a request from Mastodon?

In Mastodon it is possible to configure a profile in a way that you have to confirm somebody before he/she can follow you. How does a Friendica profile appear in that regard to a Mastodon user?

Friendica vs Hubzilla vs Mastodon

veröffentlicht von ij am Sa, 2018-08-25 18:58 I've been running a #Friendica node for several years now. Some months ago I also started to run a #Hubzilla hub as well. Some days ago I also installed #Mastodon on a virtual machine, because there was so much hype about Mastodon in the last days due to some changes Twitter made in regards of 3rd part...

Because the question is asked every now and then... Yes, there are apps for Friendica.

From "about Features" on friendi.ca:
Basic Twitter/GNU Social API provides easy access from a growing number of mobile and third party applications (Twidere, AndStatus, Bitlbee, Choqok, Frentcl, Gwibber, Hotot, IdentiCurse, Pidgin/Purple, Mustard, Pino, TTYtter, and more)
Clients for Android, SailfishOS and Windows

There is also a native app for Android called Friendiqa.

I prefer and personally use the Twitter/GnuSocial/Mastodon App Twidere on Android mostly for getting notifications about interactions and sharing posts and images while using a mobile device.

Question about individual, user-provided hashtags in Friendica.

This might be a dumb question. I have our node set up to only pull in a limited number of hash tags. Is there a way for individual users to specify ones that they are interested in.. and have those tags included in the network feed?

I was thinking about adding a page for users to suggest new tags to add to the global community feed. But I feel like it might already be there, and I'm missing something.
